Dear Leaders Chosen Of God,
I no longer remember the reason but there was a meeting of area pastors in the city. We were at a country church in western Kansas. At lunch one of the pastors asked where I was pastor. When I told him, his eyes lit up, his chin dropped, and he exclaimed, "Oh, that is the church where the revival is taking place!" He was not speaking of a week of meetings but of something very special that was going on in our area.
It is hard to explain but it was an exciting time of spiritual harvest. A guy I had led to the Lord called me on the phone late one night. "Hey Pastor Jack, we have some friends over here and we are talking about God, but I don't know where to go from here. Can you come over and help?" Things like that were happening over and over again, so much so that I wasn't able to get things down around the house. I am not kidding. That is what went on for a couple of months. In fact, one day I was out getting our "swamp cooler" ready for the hot days of summer. (Any of you remember those things?) The phone rang. In half humor I hollered in to Norma, "If that is another person who wants to be saved he has to wait until I get this cooler fixed!"
Sure enough, that is what is was. One of Norma's friends was on the line. She told her that her husband had come in from the field and was sitting in their front room crying, telling her he had to know God. "Could Pastor Jack come out?" The cooler had to wait. During that period of time scores were ushered into God's kingdom. It was absolutely amazing!
That was over thirty years ago and tears still come to my eyes. The interesting thing is that it took place when the two of us were at the bottom looking up. Norma had just suffered a complete emotional and physical collapse because of a lot of mistakes we had made. I felt whipped and not even half a missionary. On top of that, this was out in the middle of nowhere where nothing important is supposed to happen. At least that would be the attitude of many.
That whole scene brings to mind some things I have read in the Bible. Do you know what God says to people like me - AND YOU? "For consider your calling...that not many wise...not many mighty...not many wellborn, are called." That leaves out a whole bunch of important people. But, have no fear, He does get to us. "But God has chosen the foolish...the weak...the insignificant...that no flesh should glory in His presence." (1 Corinthians 1;27 - emphasis mine). That is a good reality check isn't it?
Our Heavenly Father goes on and says of Himself, "For My strength is made perfect in weakness." Missionary Paul of the Bible responded, "For when I am weak then am I strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10 - emphasis mine) The way up with God is always down, never the reverse. He humbles the proud and lifts the humble.
At one of the lowest, most helpless times in our lives and in the middle of nowhere, God's Spirit moved in a remarkable way. Outsiders called it a revival. God's strength is made perfect in our weakness. When we are weak, then we are strong.
In His love,
